83. - (mostly intended for Mac users)

 Hello readers,

I am looking to facilitate everyone’s browsing experience here, so I need some feedback as to possibly troubling it would be to change the format of all the pictures I’d be posting in the near future.

The idea is to go from JPG pictures to WEBP format.

The example below speaks by itself as per the weight loss (the file, not the guys :-)  Thus allowing faster loading of the pages, as well as bandwidth savings (which is also nice for the planet), with practically no quality loss.

Left .jpg (190ko)                Right .webp ( 53ko)

Whatever your device (computer, tablet…), if you are using a browser such as Chrome / Firefox / Edge… no worries it won’t change anything, proof being you are already seing the two pictures.

But if you are using a Mac and the SAFARI browser then you may not see the second picture above properly - or even not at all. The reason is your device is not running the latest MacOS and Safari versions.

If that is the case:

  • If your MacOS is Mojave or Catalina, you’ll want to consider easily updating Safari:

        - go to the Mac’s AppStore,

        - click on Update,

        - make sure the update button next to ‘Safari’ is selected.

        - you can enable automatic updates on the same page.

  • If you are running a previous version of MacOS (e.g. El Capitan, Sierra), maybe your computer can be updated to one of the two cited above, and therefore benefit of this useful improvement (among others). As usual with Apple this is free.

I plan on starting to use.webp picture format as soon as I get enough positive feedback from you visitors.

The less comments such as « not seing the 2nd picture » or « my device is too old to be updated », the more happy for you I’ll be, and the quicker I will adapt.

In the meantime, take good care, stay safe and… Thanks a Million for being readers of WorkmenAndRednecks.
