It seems so.
That's the basic simpleness of some farmers: "My new shiny and very expensive tractor is too big to go through because of that big stone. I'll move the stone. Problem solved."
What's not mentioned: it seems that he took care to re-bury the terminal, and therefore he must have known what it was exactly, and for what purpose, while now playing candid.
Peasants can be as much tricksters as foxes when it comes to land :-)
