LOL.
The monarchy is slowly changing, isn't it?

Monarchies! When the rest of the world needs to be reminded that they aren't nearly special at all.

Monarchies: useless. Expensive. Soap opera.
Pension them off. Disentangling what is theirs and what belongs to the state would be contentious but it could be done --- like, who really owns Windsor Castle? Who pays for it? Who really owns the queen's collection of art and archives?
And has the queen, reputedly (because no-one knows her exact wealth) one of the wealthiest women in the world, if not *the* wealthiest, has the queen intervened to obfuscate her wealth or lobby govt officials to
grant her exemptions on her taxes?
Yes, she has, according to recent disclosures.

I agree. Part of the British monarchy's wealth should be given back to the people of the U.K. through nationalisation for them to fully visit those castles and residencies which their ancestors' work and taxes built and furnished. This could could even be an additional source of revenue -even slight - for the Government, Private housings and offices in downtown London come with sky rocketing prices, let them take over the huge amount of them owned by the Queen (and not only in the capital), there again lies a large revenue to appropriate. The family will still be left with their invested money that should be more than enough for them to make a more than decent living.
It reminds me when the castle of Windsor partially burned some years ago. The Queen had the inconsistency - some said the audacity -of asking the parliament to vote a budget to pay for the repairs. As much as she is loved among her people, it caused a general outcry and she eventually decided to assume the whole cost, which she obviously could.
Anyway, like I said she is loved and respected but after she dies the British monarchy will have no longer have excuses not to face the realities of the modern world. I believe her son Charles will be a fine transition King between her and his own son, for he is more a reformist than most think.
We'll know soon enough.
PS: the above is not intended to disrespect for any of my British neighbors from across the channel, whom I like very much.
