Inaugurated in 2013 in the Isola district of Milan, not far from the central railway station, this project by architect Stefano Boeri is perhaps a forerunner of tomorrow's urban planning. It consists of two residential towers (110 m and 76 m high) whose exterior walls are decorated with a veritable vertical forest. Each apartment has terraces large enough to accommodate just over 700 trees of all sizes and some 15,000 plant ornaments, giving the buildings a real canopy. This project was born out of a desire to compensate for the decrease in forest areas and to orient contemporary urban architecture towards a more ecological approach.

The weight has to be enormous. A tough engineering project to be sure.
