Interesting, and good advice. But the part that implies that lawns were invented in Levittown is false. The reason Levittown houses had lawns was because it was standard for a house to have a lawn, and had been since the late nineteenth century. See this article http://americangardening.net/1890s-lawn-seed-ad-linked-to-public-garden/ The article also shows an 1889 ad for grass seed, long before Levittown. What is true about Levittown is that it heralded the mass migration of people out of cities, where most people had no lawn, into suburbs, where everyone had a lawn.

My brother in drought-stricken California is converting his lawn into a xeriscape, with desert plants that require far less water.

So, Homer was right. The only problem with crabgrass is its name.

Consider more diverse landscaping, or just make the whole lawn into a patio. That uniformity also breeds bugs and blights.

Jerry and I have converted 2/3 of our front lawn to clover and we've just let the weeds have their way with out backyard.
