This morning my boss asked me a question with a friendly tone, the latter not being unusual at all but, paired with its matter it immediately set me in suspicious mode.
The question itself couldn't be innocent, knowing I signed a permanent contract with the firm only a few days back.
"Laurent: how would you like to benefit from your evening/weekend and overtime hours, paid or given back as extra hours off?"
The first thing that came to my mind was: As if in this economy I could afford a little more me-time with a little less income...
Instead I hummed and gave him the "let me think about it for a sec" look, and just answered with a candid smile: Well, it's not as if I needed more time to take care of children I do not have, so I'll stick to my paid vacation days and we'll go on with the overtime paid as per its rate.
I had a hard time not leaning over his desk whispering Nice try, boss...
But I'm pretty certain he knew what my smile was about. We share the same first name after all :-)

Sly.
And Smart.
LoL! Maddie: Truth be told, I’m experienced enough to know that one should prick up their ears to whatever bits of intel that may come up around a company's coffee machines (and to double-check them using proper channels). One of them being that January’s payroll will include the regul of all overtime hours from 2022. In other words: logic commands that I choose double pay to be spent on my next vacation than the other way around. Chess mate, Boss!
you so smart
