Although I havent been using a penholder for a long time, I have always fancied an inkwell as an eye-candy object on a desk. Something that kind of tells the beholder "Just sit and take pleasure in writing a letter".
When I saw this one on a classified ads site, I knew in an instant it was for me to buy. The price asked was surprisingly reasonable, and the vendor friendly.
The whole day long I couldn't wait to leave the job to go and pick up the parcel from my nearby post-office. And here it is, in mint condition except the tarnishing of probably being stored for decades in an attic. Splendid brass manufacturing from the 19th century that only needs a good cleaning and polishing.
We're lucky enough here in my town to have a gilder/silver smith, and I'm starting to think that I may someday soon go and ask him how much it would cost me to have this inkwell silvered. But let's put the elbow grease to work first. Shiny brass is lovely too after all ^__^

How wonderful. Just the kind of antique I’d get at an estate sale. I look forward to seeing it polished.
Now only do you have good taste in men, but objects too! I love that!
What an antique. it is a typical object that was used until the mid-twentieth century, before ballpoint pens.
Things like that deserve to let their patina shine.
It's beautiful! Letter writing is a lost art. The M.D. has robbed me of the ability to write cursive, more's the pity.
I'm looking at it but I can't tell what it is.
